Over the past two years, I have had the incredible privilege of being part of the creative community at Quality Yard in Leith, Edinburgh — an experience that has become a significant milestone within my journey as a mural artist.
Quality Yard represents everything I love about street art: creativity, collaboration, experimentation, and the ability for artwork to exist within the everyday environment. It is a space where artists can come together, share ideas, and transform a location into something vibrant and inspiring.
Being given the opportunity to create work here in both 2025 and 2026 has been an absolute honour. Returning to a space where I had previously painted allowed me to reflect on my growth as an artist and appreciate how much my practice has developed over time.
My First Mural at Quality Yard — 2025
My first experience painting at Quality Yard in 2025 was incredibly special. Creating a large-scale mural in such a creative environment was both exciting and challenging, allowing me to push my practice beyond the traditional canvas and explore how artwork can interact with public spaces.
The mural featured a thistle as its central focus — a symbol strongly connected to Scotland’s identity, resilience, and natural beauty. Throughout the process, I was amazed by the response from the public. Seeing people stop, watch the mural develop, ask questions, and share their thoughts reminded me of the unique power of street art.
The artwork became more than just a painted wall; it became a point of connection between the artist, the space, and the people experiencing it. Seeing members of the public engage with the piece and form their own interpretations was one of the most rewarding parts of the project.
Although it was bittersweet to see the original thistle mural eventually leave the wall, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have created something that left an impression on the community. One of the unique qualities of street art is that murals are often temporary — but the conversations, memories, and experiences created through them can continue long after the artwork changes.
Perhaps one day the thistle will return, bigger and bolder than before.
Returning to Quality Yard — 2026
Returning to Quality Yard in 2026 was a very meaningful moment for me. Coming back to the same creative space with new ideas, experiences, and confidence allowed me to see how much I had grown since my first mural.
It was a privilege to once again contribute to an environment surrounded by incredibly talented artists, each bringing their own unique styles, perspectives, and creative approaches. Being able to paint alongside such inspiring individuals is something I never take for granted.
Quality Yard is a reminder of why public art matters. It creates opportunities for artists to share their work with people who may not normally visit galleries or traditional exhibition spaces. It brings creativity into everyday life and allows communities to experience art in a more accessible and personal way.
The Importance of Public Art
For me, mural painting has always been about more than creating an image on a wall. It is about storytelling, connection, and creating something that becomes part of a place and its community.
Every mural carries the marks of the process — the conversations with people passing by, the unexpected moments, the challenges, and the excitement of watching an idea transform into reality. These experiences become part of the artwork itself.
My time at Quality Yard has reinforced my belief that art has the ability to bring people together. Whether someone spends only a few seconds walking past a mural or takes the time to stop and engage with it, that interaction creates a connection.
I am incredibly grateful to Quality Yard for providing a platform that supports artists and celebrates creativity. Being invited back in 2026 after my first mural in 2025 is something I truly value, and I look forward to continuing to develop my practice within spaces that celebrate imagination, collaboration, and community.
Thank you to everyone who supported, engaged with, and experienced my work at Quality Yard. It has been an unforgettable part of my artistic journey, and I cannot wait to see where the next wall takes me.
