My TQFE Journey: Discovering My Purpose as an Art & Design Lecturer

Completing my Teaching Qualification in Further Education (TQFE) has been one of the most meaningful achievements of my journey so far. This qualification represents much more than becoming a lecturer — it represents a personal journey, a return to education, and the opportunity to support students in the same way that my own lecturers supported me.
My placement at Glasgow Kelvin College was a significant part of this journey. During my time there, I had the opportunity to work with Art & Design students across a variety of levels, each with their own individual experiences, abilities, and creative approaches.
I want to be honest and acknowledge that my placement experience was not without its challenges. Navigating certain aspects of the college system and some of the experiences I encountered within the campus environment was difficult at times, and it was something I personally struggled with throughout my placement. However, I am grateful that these concerns were recognised, and I received apologies from members of staff regarding aspects of my experience.
Despite these challenges, the most important part of my placement was my time spent with the students. I have nothing but positive things to say about them. Watching their confidence develop, seeing them engage with my lessons, and witnessing their creativity grow over such a short period of time was genuinely inspiring.
One of the most rewarding moments was hearing that some students felt inspired by my teaching and approach. To know that I had made even a small positive impact on their creative journey meant more than I can express. Seeing students embrace new ideas, challenge themselves, and grow both creatively and personally reminded me exactly why I wanted to become a lecturer.
My decision to pursue teaching is deeply connected to my own experience as a student. At 15 years old, I left high school due to severe bullying, and at that point in my life I had very little confidence in myself. I struggled to see my own potential and did not believe I had the skills or ability to succeed.
Returning to education through New College Lanarkshire changed everything for me. The support, encouragement, and belief shown by my lecturers — particularly Kelly, Sandra, and Simone — helped me discover not only my abilities as an artist but also my confidence as an individual. They gave me the opportunity to grow, develop, and become the person I am today.
That experience is the reason I chose the teaching route. I want to provide that same sense of encouragement and support for my own students. I want to help students discover their creative voices, build confidence, and realise their potential — not only as artists but as individuals.
Art education has the power to transform lives. It did that for me, and now I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to help create that experience for others.
I am extremely proud to have achieved my TQFE and officially begin this next chapter as an Art & Design lecturer. I look forward to continuing to learn, grow, and support the next generation of creative individuals.
