When Darkness Meets Colour

When Darkness Meets Colour is my entry for the Scottish Portrait Awards. This self-portrait explores my relationship with creativity and the way I experience the world around me. The monochromatic figure, set against a distressed billboard-inspired background, reflects themes of isolation, uncertainty, and the emotional weight that can shape our lives. In contrast, the vibrant paintbrushes introduce colour as a symbol of imagination, resilience, and hope.
For me, art has always been more than a creative practice—it has been a way of making sense of the world. Even in life's darker moments, creativity has offered clarity, purpose, and the ability to transform difficult experiences into something meaningful. This work is a reflection of that belief: that art has the power not only to change how we see the world, but also how we see ourselves.
