Held Against the Weather

This painting is based on Antony Gormley’s sculpture Grip in Kintyre and the surrounding coastline. I was interested in capturing the feeling of the place rather than a literal view — the movement of the weather, the openness of the sea, and the sense of the figure standing against it. I was really drawn to the contrast between the man-made sculpture and the surrounding landscape, and how the figure feels both part of it and separate from it at the same time.
